Entelechy comes from the Greek and means bearing the goal within itself." It is a type of motivation, inspiration, quest for self-determination, and vital force directing life to become all one is capable of being.
Aristotle said that change is the passage from potential to actual. The acorn is a potential oak tree, and the mature tree is the realization of the potential of the acorn. An acorn can be planted in the middle of an orange grove, and it will not become an orange tree. In the same vain, a blade of grass doesnt need to learn to be one -- it just is. When I heard about this concept and thought about its application to humankind, it immediately expanded my envelope, shares Theresa.
As long as people see themselves as separate and look toward personal gain, they remain bound by their ego. However, when they're able to let go -- and become a symbiotic part of a web of relationships, offering themselves in service to their community -- then they become fulfilled. They realize themselves.
Many great teachers and masters -- such as Jesus, St. Francis, Shakespeare, Mozart, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Einstein, Martin Luther King, and Mother Teresa -- were ordinary individuals who knew what it was to be human. But they also dedicated themselves to their extraordinary divinity and, with a superhuman commitment to serving others, they achieved their greatness.
It has been said that gifted people with entelechy are often attractive to others who feel drawn to their openness and to their aspirations and visions. Being near someone with this energy gives others hope and motivation to achieve their own self-actualization. "I believe we ALL have entelechy, whatever we want to call it," says Theresa. I know that when we open to it, and even ask it to guide us, extraordinary things happen. It can be contagious!"
